What Makes Dialogue in the Desert
Different From Other Programs?

It’s Five Days. Why not one or two days? Dialogue started as a three-day Workshop, but we found that people need five days to absorb and practice the tools so when they return, they return having experienced the material, not just listened to someone else talk about it. We know that it’s hard to be gone for this long. But we’ve found that the harder it is for people to get away, the more they need the tools the Workshop offers. We start Sunday evening and end Friday mid-morning. Look on Dialogue as an investment not only in your firm, but also in your own professional and personal development. Our 2,000 alums universally say that Dialogue is the best investment they have ever made in their career growth.
The Tools. Many conferences give you theory. Dialogue is a Workshop and it gives you tools–our Strategy Map helps you think and plan strategically and do so on the spot–when there is never enough time to think and plan. You’ll practice tools that will help you improve your ability to present, persuade and “sell” your plan to others.
It's Hands-on. Dialogue engages you every step of the way. We believe that people learn best by doing and in Dialogue you’ll be involved in focused individual and small group work that helps you absorb and learn–and take back to teach others.
Your Issues. Dialogue is unique in that you’ll work your firm’s issues throughout the week, not hypothetical ones. Our interest is that when you return, you can apply the tools to any issue that comes up in your department, company–or in your life.
Small Diverse Groups. You won’t be elbow-to-elbow with hundreds of others, as in many conferences. We limit participation in each Workshop to give you individual attention and to ensure that you have time to share and learn from others. No Workshop ever has more than 16 participants; most sessions usually have 10-12 people. Your fellow participants will likely come from all over the world. Most Workshops have a sprinkling of Canadians and Americans, and we’ve had participants from Australia, England, Europe, Asia, Mexico, Bermuda, and Jamaica.
Diverse Participant Backgrounds. Participants come representing a wide range of job titles and companies. From Directors to Managers, from Coordinators to Specialists and from Fortune 100 companies to nonprofits and government agencies, chances are you’ll be in a diverse group of talented people. It matters little what your title or responsibilities are—from a project manager to a corporate communicator, from an HR practitioner to a systems engineer, Dialogue is for anyone who wants to learn essential skills of thinking, planning, communication and leadership. We’ve had orchestra managers, those starting their own firms, educators and consultants benefit from the program.
Low Fee, Great Value. Dialogue is the lowest cost Workshops, on a per day basis, of any that we measure against. Some conferences charge as much for a one or two day program as we do for five days. The value is simply unsurpassed. A room at the White Stallion–our Workshop location–includes not only a great room (casita), but all your meals and ranch activities. And the meals are fantastic! The price of room and board at the Ranch is the price of what most hotels associated with conferences in large cities charge just for the room alone.
The Location. Dialogue is held in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona on the 3,000-acre White Stallion Ranch, some 16 north of Tucson. We hold it here because we’ve found the Sonoran Desert to be the best place for learning that we’ve ever encountered. You’ll be away from the noise and nightlife of a big city and you won’t be in a sterile hotel environment. Plus, we incorporate everything in the ranch and desert environment in the Workshop so you are constantly learning from a multitude of experiences. The Ranch is family-owned and is one of the premier guest ranches in the nation. Everything about it is relaxing, comfortable and invigorating. You’re sure to fall in love with it.
The Lasting Effect. Ask our alums: the tools and learning from Dialogue stay with them long after the Workshop is over. Even after 10 years, many of our alums say that they are still using the tools and what they learned from the Workshop. An added value is that your fellow classmates will become lifelong colleagues and friends. Workshop participants tend to stay in touch with each other for years after their sessions and are a great source for networking.
Your Workshop Leaders. For more than 20 years, Joe Williams has been considered one of the leading teachers, practitioners and thinkers in organizational communication, strategy and persuasion. He holds more than 100 awards and his firm works with some of the leading companies today, such as Chevron, McGraw-Hill, National City, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and General Dynamics, providing research, planning and training. When his schedule permits, John Williams, who heads up the company’s research practice, joins sessions as well.
